Berkeley Fire and Police Departments responded to a fire in a residential apartment building on the 1300 block of Berkeley Way, after receiving multiple calls at 4:45 p.m. Monday, according to BFD Assistant Fire Chief Keith May.
BFD arrived on scene at 4:48 p.m. to find pressurized, black smoke coming from the second and third floors of the building and immediately called for additional units, May said.
After evacuating and searching the building, they rescued six people who were trapped inside. Three were transported to a local facility with minor inhalation injuries, May added.
Though the fire was put out at 5:17 p.m., May said it is unclear whether the residents of the building will be displaced.
May added that BFD does not yet know the cause of the fire.
As of a 5:09 p.m. BPD alert, the 1300 block of Berkeley Way and University Avenue as well as the adjacent blocks of Acton and West were closed to all nonemergency vehicles.
May could not confirm whether the closure had been lifted and the alert said that BPD will provide updates when the status of the closures change, which they have not done as of press time.
BPD could not be reached for comment as of press time.
Check back for updates.
