Berkeley Police Department, or BPD, arrested a 16-year-old boy Monday after receiving a tip that he was recruiting high school students to participate in a mass shooting at Berkeley High School involving explosives, according to a Nixle Alert released Wednesday afternoon.
He was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive device materials and threatening to commit a crime which will result in death or great bodily injury, the alert added.
According to the alert, BPD received the tip May 21, after which officers obtained a search warrant for the teenager’s residence. Police found parts of explosives and assault rifles, knives and other items that “could be used to create additional weapons.”
The teenager turned himself in to BPD on May 30, according to the alert.
