The face of Cal football for the past four years is on the move.
Redshirt senior quarterback Chase Garbers announced via Twitter on Dec. 14 that he is declaring for the 2022 NFL draft.
While sporting a blue and gold uniform, Garbers has thrown for 6,580 total yards and boasts 1,174 total yards on the ground. During the fall 2021 season, the Newport Beach local surpassed former Cal quarterback Joe Kapp as the program’s all-time lead rushing quarterback and ranked within the Pac-12’s top three quarterbacks for total offense.
Garbers’ decision follows a series of announcements made by a number of graduating Bears, including Nikko Remigio, Trevon Clark and Christopher Brooks. Stretched thin of former starters, Cal will have to rely heavily upon younger faces to fill gaping voids next season.
Sophomore Zach Johnson and freshman Kai Millner may likely be front-runners to start for the Bears at the quarterback position next season, assuming seasoned transfers aren’t waiting on the sidelines to take Garbers’ place.
