In a week as gloomy as finals, UC Berkeley students have something to celebrate: Three-star running back Ashton Hayes intends to sign with Cal football after decommitting from Nebraska on Monday.

As the Huskers only running back commit since June, Hayes is now Cal’s first. In the past few months, running backs Jaydn Ott and Kaleb Johnson both decommitted from the blue and gold, and Christopher Brooks entered his name into the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, leaving a void for the Bears to fill.

Hayes — who last played at Robert McQueen High School in Reno, Nevada — rushed for 1,735 yards and accumulated 25 touchdowns in his senior season. As a sophomore, he racked up 2,429 yards on the ground and averaged 186.8 yards per game.

Along with Cal and Nebraska, Hayes also received offers from Utah, San Diego State and Fresno State. According to 247Sports, he is the eighth-best class of 2022 running back recruit in Nevada.
