Recent UC Berkeley alumna Angela Zhao is filing a lawsuit against Alliance Residential, the national parent company of the local Allston and Stadium Place apartments, for property loss.
Zhao and her roommates lived in the Stadium Place apartments on Fulton Street in Downtown Berkeley, where she said she had a lease until July 31. According to Zhao, the building’s management team allegedly ended the lease May 22, 70 days early, and removed her possessions from the space.
Alliance Residential and the building’s management were contacted for comment but did not respond as of press time.
According to Zhao, building management confirmed the original July 31 move-out date in a May 6 email exchange. She added that she was charged rent for June.
Despite the July 31 planned move out, Zhao said her clothes and other personal items were gone when she returned to the apartment May 28, along with the appliances and furniture.
“It caused me a lot of emotional and mental distress,” Zhao said. “Housing insecurity during this time is very, very relevant to students and to Alameda County as a whole, especially to lower-income individuals.”
She added that she was planning to stay in Berkeley through July, but had to book a flight back to Texas instead.
Some of Zhao’s belongings were located on the property in trash bags by a manager. According to Zhao, management allegedly accepted responsibility for the situation and believed the apartment was fully vacated upon receiving another roommate’s keys May 22.
According to Zhao, building management offered her $1,250 in damages — but Zhao estimates that lost and damaged property totals more than $5,000.
“This is everything I owned, everything I bought with my own money that I had been able to make from internships and part-time jobs,” Zhao said. “I had no alternative other than to sue.”
