JANUARY 22, 2020

The new year brings new promises to get out and have fun more. It’s easy to click “going” on a Facebook event, but it’s not as easy to actually go. We at the Clog believe that UC Berkeley students deserve to have some fun this year, so we’ve compiled a list of cool events and things you can do around campus or in the Bay Area.

San Francisco Dessert Festival

You don’t want to miss San Francisco’s only dessert festival this Saturday afternoon at the SOMArts Cultural Center. If you have an intense sweet tooth and you’re down for a day of indulgence, for $40, you can taste some of the Bay Area’s best confectioners’ one-of-a-kind creations!

Map each of the 27 bear statues on campus

Set out with a friend or two for a fun morning of exploration and discovery. Challenge yourselves to see who can spot the smallest bear statue!

Take a DeCal or a freshman/sophomore seminar

These one or two-unit classes are a great way to engage yourself in something completely new that you never thought you’d be exposed to. With freshman and sophomore seminars, you have professors at the top of their fields imparting their knowledge from years of experience on a variety of interesting topics such as “How and Why Do Birds Sing” and “How to Read without the Help of Emojis.”

Beethoven, Laverne Cox and Bollywood

Cal Performances has an exciting lineup this semester that is going to leave you at the edge of your seat! You do not want to miss Jonathan Biss performing Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas as a part of Beethoven’s 250th birth anniversary celebrations or miss hearing Laverne Cox’s poignant and moving talk. And for all you Bollywood buffs, a magnificent display awaits — “Bollywood Boulevard: A Journey Through Hindi Cinema Live.”

Study in each library

Moffitt and Main Stacks aren’t all that we have — did you know that there’s a Newspapers and Microforms library? We have 37 libraries in total to check out, so get going! Your grades will improve from all the studying and you’ll get to brag that you’ve been to every single one.

Immerse yourself in nature

Sometimes, you just need to go outside and breathe in the fresh air. If you haven’t already, take a walk through the UC Botanical Garden, the Berkeley Rose Garden or Tilden Park for a relaxing moment away from the fast pace of life at Berkeley. You can schedule a tour of the UC Botanical Garden if you want to learn more about the beautiful plant life!

Take part in Lunar New Year festivities!

Join the fun by going to a Chinese New Year parade, street fairs and food festivals in San Francisco! Not only will Chinatown be teeming with activities, but the San Francisco Zoo also has a special Lunar New Year celebration, and visitors born in the year of the rat receive free zoo admission!

Chocolate Festival in San Francisco

Satisfy your sweet tooth this March by indulging in heavenly, chocolaty goodness and an evening of demos, tastings, talks and interviews!

We hope that you all join us in trying to make the most out of our spring semester by fulfilling this bucket list with us. There’s always something to do on campus or nearby, so take advantage of everything our home has to offer!
