Cal football head coach Justin Wilcox concluded his Monday post-practice press conference with some unexpected news: outside linebacker Joseph Ogunbanjo has been suspended.

“He’s not with the team right now,” Wilcox said of Ogunbanjo’s absence. “He’ll be indefinitely suspended.”

The reason for Ogunbanjo’s suspension was not specified. The true sophomore from Houston, Texas has competed in 16 games across the past two years, and has recorded seven tackles, a forced fumble and two quarterback hits in 2019.

Ogunbanjo was the second-highest rated defensive recruit from Cal’s 2018 class, only behind defensive back Chigozie Anusiem.

In Ogunbanjo’s absence, redshirt senior Ben Hawk Schrider, true freshman Braxten Croteau and true freshman Orin Patu figure to see increased reps backing up starters Cameron Goode and Tevin Paul at the outside linebacker position.

In the nature of this program, Cal games the rest of this year project to be eerily similar to what’s already been played out — not a lot of points, on either side of the ball.
