On Aug. 9, the current executive director of the ASUC Student Union and associate dean of students, Daryl Ansel, will be leaving his position, according to UC Berkeley spokesperson Adam Ratliff.
The ASUC Student Union provides students with access to resources such as the LEAD Center, runs the Berkeley Art Studio, hosts restaurants and runs the student store, among other things. According to Ratliff, Ansel helped to bring a broader variety of restaurants to the union, including those from the La Cocina incubator as well as 1951 Coffee Company, during his time as executive director.
“As a Golden Bear himself, I know how dedicated Daryl was to promoting and developing socially just programs and services for all students,” said Stephen Sutton, vice chancellor for student affairs at UC Berkeley, in an email from Ratliff.
Ansel helped establish a 10-year fiscal plan for the ASUC Student Union during his three years as executive director and supported free speech on campus, which led to the creation and implementation of a new Major Events Policy, according to Ratliff.
According to Ratliff, Ansel is leaving his position as executive director and associate dean for a position as the director of hospitality at the Presidio Trust, an agency that manages much of the Presidio of San Francisco.
“We thank (Ansel) for his service to our students and our campus, and we wish him well on his new endeavors,” Ratliff said in an email.
The campus is currently looking for an interim replacement, who will assume the title of both executive director of the ASUC Student Union and associate dean of students.
As director of hospitality at the Presidio Trust, Ansel will be replacing Karen Maggio, who served in the position for seven years.
“Daryl served the ASUC Student Union during a complex time of growth and rejuvenation, and was dedicated to supporting the student experience,” Sutton said in Ratliff’s email. “I wish Daryl all best and know that the Presidio is fortunate to have his talents.”
