On Thursday afternoon, Berkeley Police Department officers responded to a call reporting that there was an armed man on campus at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, according to a community alert released Friday.

Upon arriving, the officers determined that the suspect had already left campus. After reviewing campus surveillance video and witness statements, officers were able to identify the suspect, according to the alert.

The suspect identified in the officers’ investigation later voluntarily came to BPD to give a statement. At this point in its investigation, BPD has said it does not have enough information to determine conclusively whether there was a firearm actually on campus, according to the alert.

BPD is still reviewing the incident at this time.
