Berkeley Police Department officers responded to calls about a man firing a gun in or around a van on the 900 block of Heinz Street on Thursday at 5:59 p.m., according to a Nixle Alert released at 7:32 p.m. that day.
BPD officers notified the public to avoid an area in West Berkeley due to the presence of an armed person through a Nixle alert released Thursday at approximately 6:19 p.m. The armed person was suspected to be in the area bounded by Fifth, Anthony, Ninth and Grayson Streets, the alert said — the area of Berkeley near the Aquatic Park surrounding Berkeley Bowl West.
Officers located the van in a parking lot around the corner of Heinz and Seventh Street upon arrival and convinced a man inside to come out of the vehicle using a loud speaker, according to the later alert. The man was taken safely into custody.
According to the later alert, officers are still in the area conducting further investigations on the incident.
