On Nov. 24, 2017, UCLA quarterback Devon Modster replaced future NFL first round pick Josh Rosen after the latter suffered an injury while battling against the Cal defense. Modster’s second half heroics, culminating in a 30-27 win, ensured that the Bruins would fend off the Bears in a toss-up for the Pac-12’s final bowl berth last season.

A little more than a year has passed, and a lot has changed — this afternoon, the former Bruin announced his commitment to join the Cal football program beginning this spring.

Modster transferred from UCLA in September after losing a quarterback battle with freshman Dorian Thompson-Robinson and transfer Wilton Speight, enrolling at Palomar Junior College for the fall.

He maintains two years of eligibility, joining a Cal quarterbacks core featuring current starter Chase Garbers, 2017 starter Ross Bowers and dual-threat transfer Brandon McIlwain.

The 6’1”, 216 pound gun-slinger was a four-star recruit out of Rancho Santa Margarita when he committed to UCLA out of high school. He is currently in Berkeley on an official visit and reportedly met with head coach Justin Wilcox earlier in the day.

If there’s a signature game that this 2018 team will be remembered for, it’s for a hazy evening contest in Los Angeles, in which history finally bent and broke under the weight of Cal’s defense.

It isn’t fair that a team can be barred from playoff contention as a result of one bad game, and it’s ludicrous that a team can be denied the opportunity to compete without losing a single game.
