44-year-old Matthew Paul Piraino was arrested in connection to a stabbing in North Berkeley on Saturday morning, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

About 5:20 a.m., Berkeley Police Department officers responded to a reported stabbing in front of Safeway at 1400 Shattuck Ave., according to BPD spokesperson Byron White. Upon arrival, BPD officers detained Piraino and arrested him on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and violation of probation.

Piraino and the victim, a 43-year-old homeless man, had a verbal argument before the stabbing occurred, according to White.

The victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive, White said in an email.
