Honey, honey, how the thought of a second “Mamma Mia!” movie thrills me! It nearly kills me that we’ve been waiting this long since the announcement of the second movie, but it’s finally here! We know you all wish you could live on the beautiful island of Kalokairi, fall in love and dance your nights away, but unfortunately, we live in Berkeley, so that isn’t totally possible. But we know that there are a bunch of different ways you can get ready for the movie, even at home in Berkeley.
Eat some Greek food
Take your money (money, money) and throw some of it at some quality Greek meals! Nothing says “summer on the island of Kalokairi” like some gyros, spanakopita, tzatziki and moussaka. Trader Joe’s actually has some great gyros and spanakopita, but if you don’t want to do it yourself, go to Troy Greek Cuisine, Oasis Grill, Cal Gyro Mediterranean or La Méditerranée for a feast. We’d recommend the phyllo specialties at La Méditerranée; they’re ridiculously good.
Wear your most eclectic, colorful and “flowy” clothes
If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know what I mean. From the ensemble’s crazy, colorful outfits during the bachelorette party and the undone button-up cotton shirts from the bachelor party to Donna and the Dynamos’ crazy disco outfits, there’s no better way to channel the movie than by dressing like the cast. For fun, wear some overalls like Donna or cute blouses like Sophie! Raid your closet or head over to one of the local thrift shops and get ready!
Listen to the soundtrack on your way to class or work
No matter where you’re going, just pop in your headphones and let the music turn you into the “Dancing Queen.” The music is an automatic mood-booster and will have you dancing around campus in no time.
Love the people around you
Easier said than done, but you’re not living your best “Mamma Mia!” life unless you love someone. We don’t just mean romantic love, though! The first movie is also all about love between family and friends, so go appreciate your parents, siblings and friends — whether it be by visiting them or forgiving them after they make some questionable decisions (and invite your three exes to their wedding).
Break out into song with your friends
Musical performance groups sing on Sproul all the time, so you should be allowed to, too! Forget about all the embarrassment you may feel or the fact that you can’t sing (Pierce Brosnan and the rest of the male actors sure did) and go put on a show! Maybe hire out one of those a cappella groups to be your Greek chorus!
Put on your “Super Trouper” boots, fill your bellies with pita and your hearts with love, and get ready for the best movie of the year!
