MARCH 04, 2018

This week, the arts & entertainment staff has prepared a particularly eclectic selection of events to sample throughout the week. To add some spice to the rigor of midterm season, we’ve got two concerts — one from metalcore icons Of Mice & Men and one from EDM master Steve Aoki. For a more subdued night, there’s a free admission day to the de Young Museum, a night of open mic comedy at Pappy’s and the premiere of “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Tuesday, March 6 | Free admission to the de Young Museum

On the first Tuesday of each month, the de Young Museum in San Francisco is free and open to the public. Come and enjoy the museum’s priceless collections of American art from the 17th through the 20th centuries as well as art from the Pacific and Africa. The Legion of Honor is also free, so come for an all-around thorough arts experience — improve your intellect and art ho aesthetic!

Thursday, March 8 | SUPERB Presents: Comedy Open Mic Night at Pappy’s Grill & Sports Bar

Are you the funniest member of your friend group? Does your mom think you’re funny? Do you want to flex your comedy chops? Come on out to SUPERB’s biannual comedy open mic night at 7:30 p.m. at Pappy’s Grill & Sports Bar. Sign up on the Facebook event’s Google form if it’s your moment to “stand up,” or come to watch and support your funny friends and classmates. This event is free with a Cal ID.

Thursday, March 8 | Of Mice & Men concert at the UC Theatre

Does midterm season make you want to scream cathartically into the infinite void of the night? If so, you might as well do that with the help of propulsive drums and face-melting power chords, provided by Of Mice & Men at the UC Theatre. The renowned metalcore group is bringing its infectious brand of stage presence to one of the most convenient concert venues in Berkeley. A scream-along in a mosh pit might be just the thing to revitalize you for the last half of the semester.

Friday, March 9 | Premiere of “A Wrinkle in Time”

A mere three weeks after the overwhelming box office success of “Black Panther,” Disney is looking to conquer the multiplex yet again with “A Wrinkle in Time.” The talent behind this adaptation is nothing short of extraordinary. Ava DuVernay, helmer of “Selma” and “13th,” is poised to lend her stellar direction to blockbuster filmmaking for the first time in her career, making her the first Black woman to direct a live-action film with a budget surpassing $100 million — hopefully the first of many such filmmakers, as “A Wrinkle in Time” seems poised to inspire a whole new generation of auteurs.

Saturday, March 10 | Steve Aoki concert at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

Early in February, Steve Aoki launched his tour for his fourth studio album, Kolony — released back in July. The star-studded album features trap legends such as Gucci Mane and Migos as well as rap stars such as iLoveMakonnen. The tour is filled with a slew of talented openers, from Deorro to Bok Nero, so Aoki’s trapped out DJ set will provide the perfect hype for a Saturday night.
