A power outage Tuesday evening affected about 7,323 PG&E customers in South Berkeley, including parts of the south campus area.

The outage started at 7:27 p.m. Tuesday and affected 6,638 customers in Berkeley and 685 customers in Oakland, according to PG&E spokesperson J.D. Guidi. The outage affected the area between Durant Avenue and 61st Street, according to a map on the PG&E website.

Guidi said PG&E does not have an estimate for restoration at this time, although the number of customers without power dropped to 227 in both Berkeley and Oakland by about 8:30 p.m. He added that PG&E does not yet know the cause or origin of the outage.

“We’ll continue to investigate (as) quickly (and) as safely as possible, and once the cause is determined, we’ll be able to make necessary repairs and restore power to customers,” Guidi said. “We were able to restore customers through other avenues at this point.”
