To some, it epitomizes the UC Berkeley experience. And to many, it’s their pride and joy to generate popular memes for students across college campuses to see. It’s UC Berkeley Memes for Edgy Teens, or simply UCBMFET (in part administrated by Daily Californian editorial staff). With 49,566 members and counting, you may be one of these newcomers just joining the party of well-crafted (for the most part) memes. If you’re just getting a foot in the door of UC Berkeley Memes for Edgy Teens, we at the Clog are here to help you out with our very own guide, breaking down the good, the bad and the overdone, to help you maneuver your way through edgy teens and their memes.
The good
What makes for a good meme, you ask? Well, my friends, originality is the key ingredient. As both a consumer and potential producer of memes, it’s your job to steer clear of repetitive content as well as memes clearly taken from Twitter or Instagram that only have slight relevance to UC Berkeley. Our favorite memes include those that encompass UC Berkeley students’ existential dread, explore the unknown pockets and people of campus as well as make fun of UC Berkeley administrative flaws (we’re looking at you, CalCentral). We advise you to stick to searching for creative and unique memes that don’t always follow the same, typical threads (me vs. me, “sad/angery reacts only”, etc.).
The bad (and the overdone)
Unfortunately for the copy-cats of UC Berkeley, the bad and the overdone go hand-in-hand. What makes for a bad meme? Repetition. Sure, it may be funny the first time, but we’ve heard enough about Haas and EECS. We get it. Haas majors are snakes, EECS majors are virgins for life who never shower. We don’t need to be told 100 times by allegedly new and decreasingly funny memes. As members of the UC Berkeley community, we at the Clog are also sick and tired of seeing the same “starter pack” and Campanile vs. Hoover Tower memes over and over again. We advise you to avoid the boring memes that lack the edginess they deserve. Let’s make UC Berkeley Memes for Edgy Teens edgy again. Yes, we know it’s too soon, but where are the Donald Trump memes?
What to expect in the future
We at the Clog don’t know everything, but we do have a feeling of what’s to come in the near future on UC Berkeley Memes for Edgy Teens. As we enter the new semester, keep a lookout for your typical “back to school” memes, along with memes about our PEELECT (president-elect) as we sadly approach Inauguration Day. Oski may also experience a resurgence in memes, and as the search for a new chancellor heats up, stay on the lookout for a new UC Berkeley figurehead to emerge. Expect Haas snake memes to finally die out (while EECS memes may linger forever) and a new major or group of students to take the heat. Pre-med? Media studies? Only time will tell.
Happy meme-ing, Golden Bears.
