FEBRUARY 10, 2016

We can all remember Valentine’s Day in elementary school, when we’d buy each other those dollar store Post-it-note-sized Valentine’s Day cards. We’d write down every classmate’s name and double-check the class master list to make sure we didn’t forget anyone and then smile in excitement while dreaming of all the Sweethearts, Nerds, chocolates and sugary lollipops we could stuff in our mouths. Now, as college students, it’s time to upgrade our sweet tooth standards to the next level. Here are some of the hottest places around campus to satisfy that sweet tooth you never grew out of this Valentine’s Day.

Cinnaholic

Cinnaholic is the place to be if you’re looking for the ultimate cinnamon bun experience. Each bun is made with vegan and cholesterol-free ingredients without any loss of sweetness or stickiness. Each cinnamon bun is personalized — you can choose from 29 different frostings and 20 different toppings. For Valentine’s Day, we at the Clog recommend the hazelnut-frosted, strawberry-topped cinnamon bun.

Cupcakin’ Bake Shop

As you walk into this bake shop on Durant Avenue, the sight of perfectly swirled frosting paired with the smell of sugary goodness immediately appeases your senses. The quality of these desserts can be attested to the use of locally sourced ingredients and beautifully decorated artisan cupcakes. Cupcakin’ Bake Shop also makes vegan and gluten-free cupcakes. This Valentine’s Day, surprise your friends or significant other with a box of red velvet or chocolate toffee cupcakes.

Crepes A-Go-Go

Looking for a more international experience? Crepes A-Go-Go is the perfect place to enjoy this classic Parisian dessert. These handmade-to-order, delicate pancakes are easy to take on the go and provide a light dessert to eat between classes. You can choose from 51 sweet crepes, 25 savory crepes or you can make your own customized confection. Treat yourself with their mightiest crepe, “King Samm,” which is made with almond powder, banana, coconut, Nutella and a dollop of whipped cream.

Vampire Penguin

Known for their decadent shaved ice concoctions, Vampire Penguin offers a variety of snow flavors, toppings and syrups. For those looking for classic flavors, this store on Telegraph Avenue has cookies and cream, strawberry and chocolate. For those with an adventurous spirit, Vampire Penguin also has premade shaved snows including “Halo Halo,” a Filipino taro dessert, and “Mexican Candy,” a mango snow topped with chamoy, chili powder, caramel sauce and fresh watermelon. These shaved ice desserts come in sizes perfect for sharing.
