Update: This article has been updated to reflect new information from Berkeley Police Department.
A leader in Theta Delta Chi contacted a campus security authority to report that a member of his fraternity had been sexually assaulted by another member of the fraternity. Police do not know when the alleged assault occurred.
Campus security authorities include administrators, Greek community coordinators, resident advisers and others who oversee students. They are charged with immediately reporting certain offenses to UCPD.
In this case, released in a Friday UCPD crime alert, the reporting member said there may be other victims.
In a separate crime alert released Thursday, UCPD published a third-party report that five individuals were given “roofies” and sexually assaulted at Delta Kappa Epsilon, a fraternity not recognized by UC Berkeley and one the campus recommends against joining.
UCPD spokesperson Lt. Eric Tejada said the police department has no additional information for the public on any of the cases. The fraternities are located in Berkeley Police Department’s jurisdiction. BPD stated in a community alert that it had not received reports of sexual assault in either fraternity.
“The Berkeley Police Department takes all reports of sexual assault very seriously,” the alert said. “Sexual assault reports are investigated fully, with respect and concern for the survivor. Sexual assault cases are complex, and demand sensitive and professional investigation.”
The campus police department releasing alerts containing limited information is a relatively new practice, which began over the summer after the department reviewed the Clery Act, a federal law that mandates colleges and universities report crimes on and near campus.
“We usually didn’t put out the alerts until we got more information,” Tejada said. “The Clery Act is very complicated, and we’re constantly reviewing it. … We realized this is something we should be doing.”
BPD requested that those with information pertaining to the cases call its nonemergency line at 510-981-5900.
