Berkeley police officers arrested an 18-year-old Richmond man on suspicion of attempted homicide and attempted carjacking in connection with an assault that left an elderly woman with life-threatening injuries Friday.
Kamau Berlin was in the middle of a carjacking attempt when he stabbed the vehicle’s owner, a 72-year-old woman, several times, police said. The alleged assault occurred around 4:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Russell and Otis streets, several blocks away from the Ashby BART station.
As of Monday afternoon, the victim was still in critical condition at a local hospital. Authorities did not release what type of weapon was used or the location of her wounds.
Berlin’s arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Oakland’s Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse. He could face two felony charges for the alleged murder attempt and carjacking attempt.
