Graduates walk into the May 17 General Commencement.

Seniors walk into the Memorial Stadium as their families watch from overhead. The weather was warm and sunny.

Taqwa Elhindi, 22, grew up in Palestine and received two degrees in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies.

Noelle Guarin, Political Science and Samantha Dizon, Sociology/Media Studies finished high school in Carson, California together and now graduated together.

At 10:10 a.m. on Saturday, precisely on Berkeley time, the students of the class of 2014 filled Memorial Stadium for what would be their last time as a group. Students from across the campus came together under the hot California sun to celebrate all their hard work. Graduates heard Chancellor Nicholas Dirks give some words of inspiration interwoven between traditional speech. At 11 a.m., the class of 2014 received congratulations from U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Finally, at 1:35 p.m., the former seniors of UC Berkeley finally became alumni.

Amid controversy, Robert Birgeneau declines to speak at Haverford commencement

Former UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau has declined to speak at the Haverford College commencement ceremony on Sunday, following protest from students who disagree with how Birgeneau responded to police’s use of force toward protesters during Occupy Cal protests in 2011.
