On Saturday, campus and community organizations will gather to honor Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid icon and former South African president who passed away last week.
The memorial will commence at 3 p.m. on Sproul Plaza and will feature reflections from notable campus and community members — including Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and State Assembly Speaker John Perez — on Mandela, who passed away Dec. 5 at age 95. Local artists, such as the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and musician Kev Choice, will also perform at the event, according to a press release from UC Berkeley NewsCenter.
The event will end with a candlelight vigil.
