Divestment from Israel has had a controversial history at UC Berkeley, where a bill urging divestment from two corporations supplying the Israeli military with materials and equipment used in alleged war crimes was passed by the ASUC Senate in Spring 2010 and subsequently vetoed by then-ASUC President Will Smelko.

Now, two opposing bills concerning the issue of divestment — SB 160 and SB 158 — have already received both widespread criticism and support from various UC Berkeley communities. A large number of students and faculty are expected to attend Wednesday night’s meeting, where the senate will discuss the bills.
